Have You Always Wanted To Learn How to Draw?

How to Design Knitwear | Visual Communication is aimed at knitters who know they’re capable of being a designer but sometimes struggle with creative self-expression. Over the course of 6 weeks, you’ll learn drawing and compositional techniques that will help you to articulate your vision. You don’t need to have any previous drawing experience.

Knitwear design in progress. Swatches of knitting surround a pad of paper and scattered pencils.

By the end of the course you’ll have:

  • A solid foundation of drawing techniques
  • A visual library full of mark-making experiments, studies and compositions
  • Increased confidence in your ability to express yourself authentically.

The only materials you’ll need are:

  • A set of drawing pencils, ranging from B to 6B
  • An A3 drawing pad or sketch pad.

Here’s what you’ll learn

A solid foundation of drawing techniques

We begin with pencil control, tonal value and the greyscale so you can tune into your senses of touch and observation.

A visual library of studies and experiments

This leads onto exercises and experimentation with mark-making, perspective, composition and texture.

Confident and authentic self-expression

By the end of the course you’ll have a sense of your drawing style and how to capture your ideas, in your way.

Natalie in Stitches

I design size inclusive knitting patterns for clothes makers who want their garments to fit well. Clothes should serve you, not the other way around. You alter clothes to fit you, not alter yourself to fit the clothes. I also teach people how to sew, how to design knitwear, and am currently creating a comprehensive, year-long knitwear design course, covering everything from illustration to pattern grading.
