The Technical Design Blueprint
A knitwear consultancy service to streamline pre-production
Too many ready-to-wear knitwear designers are losing time and money on sample revisions. The Technical Design Blueprint translates your creative vision into precise, factory-ready specifications, guaranteeing consistency, fit accuracy, and streamlined production. It mitigates the risk of wasted money on production costs and improves communication between you and your manufacturer — all while maintaining the integrity of your design concept.
I save my clients significant resources by providing technical specifications that eliminate 90% of common production errors before the first sample is even knitted. My deep expertise in yarn behaviour and garment structure means the transition from design concept to machine-ready code is clean, precise, and guaranteed to align with the intended fit and style.

What’s included in The Technical Design Blueprint?
Starting from £1200, the Blueprint is a full package consisting of three interconnected phases:
Phase One: Material and Design Feasibility Audit
Focus: Risk Assessment & Material Alignment.
Deliverables: Aesthetic & Technical Feasibility Report. This includes up to 5 physical/digital stitch swatches, a detailed analysis of the fabric behaviour, the recommended machine gauge, and final material and fibre recommendations. We’ll confirm that the design is commercially viable and ready to move to technical pattern drafting.
Phase Two: Base Size Technical Specification
Focus: Technical Translation & Precision.
Deliverables: Base Size Specification Sheet. Using your provided size chart, I’ll create the full technical specifications for one size. This includes the flat specification drawing, and the detailed knitting specification (stitch counts, row counts, shaping logic) for the factory. This document becomes the master control file for sampling.
Phase 3: Strategic Grading & Full Production Pack
Focus: Scaling and Fit Consistency.
Deliverables: Full Size Run Technical Pack. I apply your grade rules to deliver the final, comprehensive technical package for production. This includes a master spec sheet (all sizes) and the graded knitting specifications for every size, ensuring fit consistency across your entire size range.
Case Study: The Fibre Co. — Ensuring Technical Integrity for Selected Garments in a Multi-Collection Launch

Project Summary
Client: The Fibre Co. (Leading luxury yarn brand).
Service Provided: Knitwear Technical Design Blueprint.
Challenge: Designing and scaling complex garment designs across a full size range while maintaining the unique hand and drape of luxury fibre blends.
The Challenge: Translating Luxury Fibre into Scalable Technical Specifications
Client required absolute certainty that complex stitch patterns on selected key garments would scale accurately from size XS to 5XL. The key risk was inconsistency in the grading rules and ensuring that the final garments would maintain their intended drape and fit precision without compromising the luxury feel of the yarn.
The Blueprint in Action:
- Risk Mitigation: Conducted a comprehensive Yarn Behaviour Audit on the selected garments’ stitch structures to preempt potential sizing issues during production.
- Precision Grading: Developed bespoke, non-standard grading rules for the most structurally sensitive garments in the line, ensuring flawless execution across all sizes.
- Factory-Ready Specs: Created flawless, production-ready Master Specification Sheets and schematics, eliminating ambiguity for their technical team and significantly reducing the time spent on sample review.
- Fit Consistency: Provided detailed guidance on ease and proportion to guarantee the final garment would deliver the luxurious, expected fit to the end consumer, regardless of size.
The Result: A Flawless Launch with Guaranteed Technical Confidence
The Technical Blueprint provided a reliable, verified foundation, allowing The Fibre Co. to launch their collection with zero technical pattern errors and total confidence in the fit and size consistency. This successful execution streamlined their critical path and validated the premium positioning of their garments.

Natalie Warner | Knitting Pattern Designer and 4th Generation Dressmaker
I design size- and shape-inclusive modern knitting patterns for clothes makers who want their garments to fit well. Clothes should serve you, not the other way around. You alter clothes to fit you, not alter yourself to fit the clothes. This is at the heart of everything I do. I also offer a range of online knitwear design courses, covering everything from illustration to pattern grading, and consultancy services.
