Knitwear Design Courses

I am creating an online learning community and course programme for knitwear designers! This is currently in pilot mode. If you’d like to shape the formation of this design community, please join the dedicated mailing list below.

The first two modules on Visual Communication and Design Development have passed, but there will be future ones covering:

  • Spreadsheet building
  • Sizing and creating size charts
  • Pattern drafting
  • Grading

I don’t see myself teaching applied maths in its own right because it runs through virtually all the topics above. For isolated examples of applied maths and knitwear design, you might like this blog post and this blog post series to get an idea of how things work.

Fill out your details below to know when my online knitting classes go live and keep up with the development of the knitwear design course. People on my list always hear the news first.

In addition, you can join me over on Instagram, where I announce live dates and classes after telling everyone on my list. To find out more about me, pop over to the Features and Interviews and About pages.

Hello, I’m interested in the beginners crochet course but don’t seem to be able to book It through the wed site. Can you help me!?
    Thank you,

    Sam Burge

    1. Hi – is this for Fringe or Sew Over It?

  2. Becky says:

Do you have any beginners knitting classes coming up at Fringe? Thanks

    1. Hi – I’m afraid not, but you could turn up to Fringe’s knitting club to learn the basics. I *think* it’s on the first Wed or Fri of the month so please phone the shop to confirm. The owner and regulars will be happy to teach you. Best wishes, Natalie

Hi, I would very much like to join one of your classes in Clapham, but I am not able to do the April ones. Do you have any scheduled later in the year please?

    1. Hello – there will be another course at Clapham in June so don’t worry! I will update the page with more info in the next few days so watch this space. Thank you 🙂 Natalie

Hi, is there any beginner class available in August?
    Thanks.

    1. Hello, thanks for your message – no classes in August as it’s the summer holidays. Classes will probably resume in September/October. Best wishes, Natalie

Hi, I’m interested in signing up for the beginner crochet course at sew over it. I particularly want to learn granny squares and would also like to bring my own yarns. Would this be possible to learn in 3 hours? I’ve never crochet before but used to knit fairisle and intarsia so think I’ll be a fast learner.
    Many thanks
    Michelle

    1. Hi Michelle – thanks for getting in touch. You’ll definitely be able to crochet granny squares by the end of the course; that actually forms part of lesson 2, when I introduce students to pattern instructions and diagrams. As you already knit, I would guess that you’ll pick up the shorthand and symbols for crochet readily – it’s the same principle as knitting.
Hope this helps, and maybe meet you next week! – Natalie

    2. Hi Michelle – sorry for the confusing sign-off, I had the course at Fringe on my mind because I have just been discussing this with someone! Apart from there not being a lesson 2, my advice remains the same. Best wishes, Natalie

I wo ul like to learn Bead Crochet. Do you have a class for that?

    1. Hello – sorry for the late response. I’m afraid I don’t have a class for adding beads to crochet at the moment, but I may develop one in the future if there is enough interest. In the meantime I would recommend you look at good technique-based books by people like Jane Crowfoot or Jan Eaton, or have a look online for tutorials like this one (http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa030197.htm) or visit YouTube. There are a few different ways of beading so do take the time to look and decide which one suits you. I hope this helps. Best wishes, Natalie

  7. Kate says:

Hi Natalie, do you when you will be able to confirm your autumn classes at The White Room please?

    1. Hi Kate, I have been away for a few days so sorry for the slight delay. hopefully I’ll be able to confirm one way or the other next week, so bear with me for a little longer. Best wishes, Natalie

    2. Hello again Kate, apologies for taking longer than I expected to come back to you. The White Room are going to focus on their sewing classes and RTW collection, so I won’t be teaching any classes there until further notice. Sorry to disappoint you. Best wishes, Natalie

I would like to treat someone to a crochet class in Clapham- do you have any dates coming up for complete beginners

    1. Hi Lynn – none yet but best to check with the Clapham shop as ultimately they do the timetabling. I’m sure you won’t have to wait long! Best wishes, Natalie

  10. hello Natalie,

as you know, i think you are an amazing person and so super duper talented.

I would really like to start designing my own knitwear – like at least be able to successfully write out the pattern for a v-neck vest/jumper . i have been trying to do it on my own for a while now and im not getting anywhere fast.

Do you offer one-to-one classes on how to design knitwear?
If so, how much will a session be?
I look forward to hearing from you.

    Love, Lydia

    1. Hi Lydia,
Lovely to hear from you – and sorry for taking a while to come back to you. I’m happy to offer one-to-one classes on pretty much any topic so can help you out with your design ideas. Email me using the contact form on the ‘About’ page and we can sort something out.
      Speak soon,
      Natalie x

  11. Audrey says:

Hi, do you do any 1-2-1 crochet classes? I am in North London. Thanks Audrey

    1. Hi Audrey,
I do but only in South London now I’m afraid. Due to new work commitments I won’t be travelling up to North London any more. There will be a new crochet teacher at Fringe in the new year – do get in touch with the shop to find out more. Hope this helps.
      Best wishes,
      Natalie
