Sewing course | Design and Make Your Own Clothes

Creative pattern cutting toile of bodice back design - closeup shot

My design and make your own clothes course gives you a full introduction to the design process.   Taking one garment type at a time, you’ll learn all about:

  • Drafting and fitting a block to your personal measurements;
  • Applying creative pattern cutting techniques;
  • Creating master plans to generate a range of styles for your chosen garment;
  • Sewing up your designs as a toile – to check that you’re happy with what you’ve done – and making up your designs in your final fabric.

You’ll particularly enjoy this course if you already have some experience with clothes making, and are interested in creative freedom beyond the confines of commercial sewing patterns.

What if I’m new to sewing?

If you’re a beginner, I recommend my one-to-one courses!  I’ll get you started with a bag project; you have four to choose from.  This will familiarise you with the sewing machine and the basics of sewing.  This cheerful project bag is an ideal start – and something you’ll actually use in your everyday life.  You’ll also learn how to customise the finished measurements – this is a gentle introduction to altering patterns – if you have a particular use for your bag.

A cheerful white polka-dot and blue tote bag, generously sized with handles and a drawstring, sits on top of an electric piano. It's the project for the beginners' sewing course described below.

Once you’ve made the bag, you can move onto projects like pyjamas for your first items of clothing.  These are easy fitting, so you don’t have to pay too much attention to detail.  You can concentrate on sewing and understanding pattern instructions.

You’ll be more confident about making more items for your wardrobe once you’ve made the bag and a few more simple items of clothing, and be ready to think about made to measure garments for yourself.
