Description
Knitting pattern design development is how we keep an ancient craft from showing its age.
It’s sometimes said that there’s nothing new under the sun. But with a world population of 8.2 billion Earthlings and counting, let’s agree to disagree 😉
Expressions like that are made in frustration; where are all the bright, new ideas? The answer is that they’re somewhere inside you. Our mission is to wake them up and get them to rise and shine, to be welcomed by the world.
THAT is idea generation.

What’s included in the knitting pattern design development taster course?
The two techniques in this taster course will shed light on how you can create several ideas out of one, or none at all if your starting point is a stitch library. They are adapted from exercises I learnt as a fashion student, and use two frameworks as starting points: the showstopper and the ensemble.
The showstopper is explored through silhouette and collection building, and the ensemble is used for swatch development and designing pattern repeats or tessellations by way of example. Here’s a preview of the showstopper model.
You don’t have to design in or publish in collections to get the benefits of this lesson. Idea generation is all about producing a bank of designs and expanding your creative range. This stops you from feeling burnt out, pigeon-holed, or like a one-hit wonder.
Once you realise how much creative energy you have, you’ll feel brighter and more confident about being a successful knitwear designer. These idea generation techniques will help you to mine for gold in the depths of your imagination, allowing your ideas to shine bright like the diamonds they are.
You will need:
- Your favourite drawing pencil or pencils
- An A3 pad or sketchbook – loose leaves or A3 or A4 paper can work well too
- (Optional) A stitch pattern of your choice from a stitch library
- (Optional) Yarn you enjoy knitting with. This helps your ideas to flow freely without distractions or discomfort
- (Optional) Knitting needles of your choice
