Description
From Style Vision to Reality: Crafting Knitwear That Truly Fits
Forget the frustration of ill-fitting garments and the limitations of patterns that don’t quite capture your essence. This course is designed specifically for knitters who want to create clothes that feel like a second skin — clothes that truly make you feel comfortable and confident in your own skin. I believe that apparel patterns should put you front and centre of the design process, allowing you to express yourself authentically and take pride in your skills. Designing custom knitting patterns to reflect your personal style is part of this solution.
The Made to Measure Knitwear course provides you with reliable frameworks and processes that go beyond generic solutions. You’ll learn how to anchor your artistry in solid principles, ensuring your unique designs are not just beautiful but also wearable and long-lasting. Imagine opening your closet each morning, knowing that every piece was crafted by you, for you, ready to uplift you for whatever the day brings. The emotional energy, money, and time you’ve spent struggling with ill-fitting clothes can now be redirected to what truly matters: making your creative dreams come true.

What You’ll Master in This Transformative Course:
My comprehensive course guides you step-by-step through the process of bringing your knitwear visions to life.
Design – Visualizing Your Unique Personal Style
This foundational module is where your journey truly begins. We’ll dive into basic drawing skills and visual research, not because you need to be a fine artist, but because having a clear visual reference of what you want to wear is the ultimate launchpad for successful design. You’ll discover how to effectively articulate your vision, even if you’ve never picked up a pencil for design before. I’ll show you techniques that help you appreciate the true value of your initial knitwear design ideas, setting you up for success.
Building on these visual communication skills, you’ll then apply them to the exciting world of surface pattern design, silhouette, garment styling, and fabrication. This is where your ideas start to connect with your body and your emotions. You’ll learn powerful design techniques specifically crafted to maximize the potential of your ideas, helping you conserve energy and focus your creativity where it counts.

Knitwear Design Realisation: Getting to the “Bones” of Your Garment
This is where the magic truly happens: pattern drafting. You’ve established your visual connection and articulated your design. Now it’s time to translate that vision into concrete measurements and shapes. This module tackles the maths head-on, in a way that’s exciting, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. The compositional relationships you established in the previous modules will begin to take form, transforming your artistic concepts into a tangible blueprint for your knitted garment.
Your body shape will be as inspirational as your visual research as you incorporate custom design and fit details to style your garments. Along the way, the penny will drop about WHY you’ve needed certain fit alterations over the years — and you’ll be spurred on to engineer your own solutions besides. It’s also time to write up your notes into a knitting pattern and get some stitches on the needles! This is where you synthesise everything you’ve researched and calculated and start knitting up your made-to-measure knitwear — all custom designed by you. This is the beginning of a more positive relationship with yourself, your body, and the creative talent that’s been waiting for you to give it a chance — in the right learning environment.

What You’ll Need For Designing Custom Knitting Patterns:
- A set of drawing pencils, B to 6B softness
- An A3 or A4 sketchpad
- An A5 sketchbook for design inspiration when you’re going about your day
- A scientific calculator with parentheses/brackets, pi, and trigonometry functions.
- Pen and paper for note-taking.
- Pencil and ruler for drafting (a mechanical pencil with 2H to HB leads is ideal).
- Squared or grid paper (A4 or letter size). For inches, you’ll need quarter-inch (quad or quadrille) paper (4 boxes per inch). For centimetres, 5mm x 5mm squared paper (2 boxes per centimetre). Printable links will be provided if you can’t find a pad!
You don’t need years of industry experience or complex accreditations. What you need is genuine human contact and guidance from someone who does, and understands the intricacies of garment fit and design. Someone who can help you take everything you need and run with it.
