Grading, algorithms and visual maths | Knitwear Design Initiation taster course

£50.00

Do you dream of serving knitters better by accommodating different body shapes and sizes, moving beyond boxy silhouettes and into truly customized patterns? The thought of pattern grading can feel daunting, especially if you’re largely self-taught and wary of complex math.

But what if you could demystify the process and gain the confidence to create patterns that fit everyone beautifully?

“Pattern Grading: Algorithms and Visual Maths” proves you don’t need to be a maths expert to grade patterns effectively. This course focuses on understanding the power of algorithms – which you can use in spreadsheets or as a basis for visual drawings. You’ll learn their importance in grading, the significance of understanding body landmarks and shapes for accurate and inclusive sizing, and how to utilize grading outputs like schematics and garment measurement tables.

Gain the solid principles and techniques you need to create patterns that put the wearer front and centre.

  • Duration: 60-90 minutes
  • Access: Lifetime access to course content

Description

Grading is often understood as the process of generating a range of sizes for a pattern that’s been designed.  There’s an idea that it has to be scaled up or down…but the how is often a mystery.  And there’s maths (yikes!).

But…what if I told you that grading is actually a more design-oriented process, and that the numbers are the result or output of that process – nothing more.  What would you think then?

You don’t need to be a maths whiz to be good at grading.  The only mathematical principle you need to grasp is algorithms.

Algorithms are what you plug into Excel (if you’re using a spreadsheet), or use as a basis for visuals, if you prefer to draw.

In the preview video below, I explain how this all comes together to set you up for Excel or any other grading method you choose.

This knitting pattern grading taster course will help you to learn:

  • What algorithms are and why they’re so important for grading patterns
  • Why deep understanding of landmarks and the body shape(s) represented by the measurements of your sizing chart is the key
  • How to use outputs of grading, like schematics and garment measurements tables, as a means of triangulating a relationship between you, your designs, and the knitters who’d love to make them.

My hope is that this taster course demystifies grading – or at least makes it feel a lot less intimidating!

All the information you need to grade your pattern is contained within the pattern itself, because algorithms = patterns.  You just need to extract this information using the right processes.
