Lacy panelled cowl with garter stitch and picot detail

Description

Shiver is a lace knitted cowl with leaf panels, garter stitch picot and eyelet details.  Knitted in DK yarn, it is lightweight enough to provide warmth without heaviness, and the sinuous lines of the triple leaf pattern add a vintage touch.  This project moves quickly once you’ve mastered the pattern repeat.

I chose to knit the sample in mohair and silk, but the lace pattern works equally well in a solid or smooth yarn.  The Icicle legwarmers feature a similar texture and are knitted in Eden Cottage Keswick DK.

Directions are also given for a scarf variation of Shiver. Guidance on yarn quantities is given in the pattern, as is advice on customising the length and width.  This lace knitted cowl is light enough to be wrapped twice, and you can extend the number of repeats to create a beautiful wrap.

Instructions for the lace pattern are written and charted, so you can choose the directions that suit you best.  There are also helpful notes for making length and width alterations.

And if you’d also like some coordinating accessories, take a look at the Nippy headband or Bitten gloves.

Special Techniques

  • Lace increases and decreases (yarn over, ssk, sssk, k2tog, k3tog, CDD)

The photographed sample was knitted in Rowan Fine Lace and Rowan Kidsilk Haze, and the two yarns were held together throughout.  Substitution advice is given in the pattern notes, especially for those allergic to mohair.  However, please visit YarnSub for more immediate information: https://yarnsub.com/.
